The ACCA Professional Exams
The ACCA\’s professional examinations are some of the hardest exams you are ever likely to face. Add to this the fact that you will be studying at evenings and weekends, at the same time as holding down a full-time job, and the task ahead of you can become even more daunting.
Then again, ask someone who has already been through it, and they will tell you just how valuable it can be to have the letters \’ACCA\’ after your name and how many doors the qualification can open.
If you are coming to the end of your degree, and the thought of another three years\’ hard work and more exams doesn\’t appeal, then this is probably not the career for you.
If, on the other hand, you are motivated and determined enough to put in the hard work to succeed, then read on.
Exam structure
The new ACCA Qualification is designed to provide the accounting knowledge, skills and professional values which will deliver finance professionals who are capable of building successful careers across all sectors, whether they are working in the public or private sectors, practicing in accounting firms, or pursuing a career in business. There are two stages to the ACCA exams: Fundamental level and Professional level.
Progression through the syllabus
To satisfy the exam requirements which are necessary to become an ACCA member, students must pass or be exempted from all nine exams in the Fundamentals level, pass all three exams in the Essentials module, and successfully complete two Options module exams in Professional level.
Under the new qualification, there is no requirement for students to sit and/or pass any of the exams together, including the three Essentials module exams in the Professional level.
Students are expected to study each module – Knowledge, Skills, Essentials and Options – in order. Students may attempt a maximum of four exams at any one sitting. Papers may be attempted from different modules at the same sitting as long as the modules are attempted in order. Students may vary the order they attempt exams within each module but they may not vary the order of the modules. However, ACCA strongly recommends that papers within a module are taken in order.
Fundamentals level
The Fundamentals level is divided into two modules – Knowledge and Skills. The Knowledge module (F1-F3) introduces students to the core areas of financial and management accounting. This provides the platform from which the other technical accountancy areas will be studied in greater detail in the Skills module.
The Skills module (F4-F9) contains six subjects which comprehensively cover the main technical areas that any accountant – regardless of their future career aspirations – are expected to have mastered. These comprise law, performance management, taxation, financial reporting, auditing, and financial management.
Professional level
- P1 Professional Accountant PA
- P2 Corporate Reporting CR
- P3 Business Analysis BA
- P4 Advanced Financial Management AFM
- P5 Advanced Performance Management APM
- P6 Advanced Taxation ATX
- P7 Advanced Audit and Assurance AAA
Practical Experience Requirement (PER)
A key component of the ACCA Qualification is gaining relevant practical experience. As an ACCA member, you will need to be equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge to meet different challenges in your career. ACCA’s practical experience requirement (PER) enables you to apply the knowledge gained through your exams; and develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours that you will need to demonstrate as a qualified accountant. PER provides a framework for achievement, confirming effective and sustainable workplace performance, making you a more valuable employee.

In-House Training
Studying for the exams is only part of your job. Our in-depth programme of practical training ensures that you have all the skills and tools needed to be an effective member of our team.
During your training, we will provide regular in-house courses, developed and presented by our own team of trainers. These courses will focus on both technical and personal skills, and should prepare you for the assignments you will be involved with.
As your career progresses, so our training develops with you – preparing you for each new task and increased level of responsibility.
On-the-job training is also important. You will be working as part of a team during your early assignments, either in the office or at clients\’ premises, and your supervisors or managers will be able to provide you with specific directions to help you tackle each job.
Accountancy is an ever-changing profession. After you qualify, we organise regular courses to keep you abreast of developments in tax, auditing and financial reporting, as well as courses designed to expand your management and personal skills.
Review and Appraisal
Following each assignment, you will receive an appraisal showing how well you performed on that job, and you will have the opportunity to discuss this with your supervisor or manager.
Every six months there is a formal review of your progress. You will have meetings with one of your managers, a member of the training department, and your counseling partner, to discuss your development and plan for the next six months.
However, we realise that six months can be a long time. In practice, most appraisal and feedback happens continuously, and a manager will always be available should you have concerns at any time.
When you start, you will also be assigned to a mentor – a senior trainee or newly-qualified who can provide more informal support and feedback.
Post Qualification
After you qualify, we recognise that you have important decisions to make. You may want to develop your career in the tax department. Alternatively, you may want to try something different, perhaps forensic accounting or IT.
Either way, we will offer you a structured career progression, recognising your individual skills and abilities, and continuing to provide you with challenging and stimulating work. As your career develops, we will help you prepare for these new challenges by providing ongoing training in management and personal skills, as well as in current issues in tax and accounting.
The Selection Process
Our normal selection process is in two parts – a group interview, including a teamwork exercise, and a one-to-one interview, usually with one of our partners.
Salary and Benefits
Our graduate salaries are competitive, and are reviewed every six months as part of the appraisal process. For your journey to work, interest-free season ticket loans are also available.
